★★★★★5.0 · 14-8
When a new child joins a group, big feelings can appear - curiosity, uncertainty, and sometimes the fear of not fitting in.
Kindness When Someone Is New is a gentle Christian picture book that helps young children learn what kindness looks like in everyday moments. Through a warm and relatable story, kids discover how small choices like staying close, waiting together, and making room for others can help someone feel safe and included.
Set during a joyful birthday celebration, this story follows a simple but meaningful moment: choosing to stay with a new friend who doesn’t yet understand the game. Without preaching or moralizing, the book shows children that kindness is not about fixing someone, but about being present.
Part of The Fruits of the Holy Spirit series from the Little Hearts with Big Faith Collection, this book introduces kindness as a fruit of the Spirit in a way children ages 3–6 can truly understand and feel.
This book helps children:
Learn how to welcome someone who is new
Practice kindness through inclusion and friendship
Understand big feelings in social situations
See kindness as a calm, everyday choice
Grow in empathy, patience, and faith
Perfect for families, Christian parents, churches, and Sunday school classrooms, Kindness When Someone Is New encourages children to reflect God’s love through gentle actions — one moment at a time.
Kindness When Someone Is New by Nathan Stone is a story that shows the value of kindness. The story takes place in a park during a birthday celebration. The simple act of kindness changes how a new child feels. When several young children are playing, one boy notices another child sitting by himself. The boy sits with the other child and then encourages him to join the others as they play. Soon, the other children are encouraging the new child. I appreciated how naturally the message of kindness is revealed through an act of kindness for another child. I thought it was nicely illustrated. A good story to teach children to recognize others' feelings.
